Thomson Foundation – Inquirer Award 2009 (December 17 2009 Deadline)
The Thomson Foundation has launched The Inquirer Award 2009 in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq. The Inquirer Award is a media initiative that aims to find the journalist who can demonstrate an ability to examine, in depth, a significant issue that is relevant to the region and its people. The Inquirer Award 2009 has three categories: print, television and photojournalism.
The competition is open to all Print and television journalists working for any Arabic language publication or television station in Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine. Professional photojournalists or students of photography from the five participating countries are eligible to take part in the Photojournalism category.
As well as receiving The Inquirer Award 2009 trophy, the first place winners in each of the three categories – Print, Television, and Photojournalism – will be hosted by the Thomson Foundation for an all expense paid study tour for one week in the UK.
The deadline for submitting all entries to the competition is 17 December 2009.
All entries must be submitted to the Press Section at the British Embassy in either Amman, Beirut, Damascus, Jerusalem or Baghdad.

Reuters-Oxford Fellowship (January 27 2010 Deadline)
The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford is looking for suitable candidates for the Mona Megalli Fellowship to be offered within the Thomson Reuters Foundation Fellowship Programme at Oxford. The Fellowship is tenable for two academic terms (i.e. 6 months) during the 2010-2011 Academic year.
The Fellowship is open to a practicing mid-career journalist from the Middle East region interested in researching and publishing material about professional standards and journalistic ethics in the region, how these impact on the practice of journalism there, and also what changes are needed or could be contemplated to improve the practice of journalism in the region.
To be considered, applicants are asked to submit a proposal which gives details of the proposed research topic and the planned output. The deadline for applications is Wednesday 27th January 2010. There is a minimum requirement of 5 years’ professional journalistic experience, and in order to take full advantage of the excellent facilities of the Institute and of Oxford University, a good working knowledge of spoken and written English is required. All Institute and University/College fees, will be paid by the Fellowship, and the fellows will also receive their travel costs and a small stipend to cover housing and living expenses.
