I'lam and Assiwar are together running a course on the media and women's issues, to begin on May 6 2011.
The coverage of women's issues in the local Arabic press is still low, women are still marginalized in the public sphere, relegated significantly to the private sphere, to the detriment of women exerting influence in their particular social, cultural and political realms. In addition, both domestic and international media represent women as body and form, often for commercial and consumer-traffic benefit.
The aim of this course is to strengthen the relationship between feminist organizations and the media, in order to improve the performance of the media in all matters relating to women's issues and gender, to put forward a more honest image of women, one that respects their roles and presents their issues fairly.
The training will span 24 academic hours in total, and following the opening session on May 6 2011, will take place on May 13, 20, 27, all in Nazareth at 'Mary's Well (Rimonim) Hotel'. Spaces are restricted to twelve journalists.
