Attack on Journalist Elias Karram

 2010-10-22

Al-Jazeera correspondent, Elias Karram, was assaulted on Thursday, October 21 2010, at a coffee shop in the 'Al-Malha' mall in Jerusalem. Journalist Karram came under physical attack from a security guard at the mall who justified his assault on Karram's 'expository coverage of Israeli soldiers that presents the soldiers in a bad light'.

The Jerusalem District Court will decide if to extend the security guard's arrest at 10:30am on October 22 2010.

I'lam strongly denounces the attack on journalist Karram, noting that it is not the first time that Karram has been intimidated and harassed for performing his journalistic duties. Karram was with Al-Jazeera photographers at the time of the attack, Morad Sa'eed and Wael Salaymeh.

On September 22 2010, an article was published in the Israeli daily Ha'aretz on research, soon to be published by the Floersheimer Institute for Policy Studies, and carried out by Marik Shtern, that 35% of Israeli Jews interviewed at the mall expressed negative opinions on Arabs.
