I'lam's Critical Media Consumption project that engaged three high schools in training on how to read the media critically successfully concluded on Saturday, July 9 2011. The four months of activity led by I'lam's Coordinator Maisoon Zoabi was brought to an official close with the 'Galilee Schniller' School visiting Radio Al-Shams to speak about their experience on 'Youth Issues', a radio programme hosted by Taghreed 'Absawi.
The project's aim is to serve as a very influential, standard-setting tool for how the media is read, interpreted and interacted with. By educating the youth in being critical about what they read in the print media and watch in broadcast news, so then we provide them with the tools to be objective, humanistic and tolerant in their digestion of media content. We can also impress on them the various means to influence the media to be responsive to their needs as youth and to their rights therein. By working with the Arabic and Hebrew press, with television programmes and film, the youth were instructed in how to spot marketing and other factors influencing media content, and how to spot media content having implications on human rights and human dignity of those covered.
The project entailed 12 meetings with each school class, for a total of 60 hours of instruction in total, and involved visits to a number of media houses, including Kul al-Arab, Al-Arab and Bokra.
On student initiative, a facebook page was created to enable the youth to post on their experience, to post pictures, and make general comments on various media content.
The project will continue during the coming academic year 2011/2012 in three different schools from Nazareth and the village of Marj Ibn Amer.
