I’lam Tours Channel 1

Arab Journalists Get to Know the Public Channel  - July 17 2012
On Tuesday, July 17 2012, I’lam organized a tour for journalists to Channel 1 in Jerusalem. The journalists held a meeting with David Witztum, the channel’s news editor and presenter. Witztum guided the journalists on a tour of the station’s various departments.

Witztum said that the station’s broadcasting of Arabic programmes is in midst of reform, while also pointing out that viewership is near zero. He confessed that the Arab public seems to prefer Al-Jazeera and other satellite Arabic channels over their own.

As for Israeli media coverage of Palestinians, Witztum admitted that the Israeli media is more “national” than professional and is also directed primarily to Israeli society, pointing out also that the Israeli media is conservative and voluntarily follows a political agenda.
And on recent developments with regard to the public’s protest movement, said Witztum: "We are the only country that claims to be a democracy with the majority demonstrating against the minority."
This journalists tour is part of I’lam’s project of monitoring the coverage of Arabs in the Israeli media, which our recent research has shown to be, by and large, unresponsive to covering the community with human rights sensitivity.
