Ilam Media Center strongly condemns the sentencing of Palestinian journalists Khadr Shaheen and Mohammed Sarhan of the news agency, Al-Alam TV to two months imprisonment by the Jerusalem District Court. They were charged with violating censorship restrictions by reporting on the start of the Operation Cast Lead incursion.
The defense asked for the suspension of the sentence of imprisonment until the appeal to the Supreme Court.
Ilam strongly condemns the sentencing, which we see as an attempt to intimidate Palestinian journalists, to strengthen the arbitrary and coercive powers of the military censor, to reinforce the practice of self-censorship, and to further curtail the right to freedom of expression of journalists.
